On December 12^th The Museum of Modern Art’s 2012 Jazz Interlude Gala honored artist, activist and filmmaker Spike Lee and philanthropists Mera and Donald Rubell. The night started with a cocktail reception in the museum. It was followed by a delicious benefit dinner with live music by jazz musician Terence Blanchard, whose music actually has been featured in numerous Spike Lee films. The evening ended with an after-party with dessert, dancing and great music by jazz artist Jason Moran and the Bandwagon. The 2012 Jazz Interlude event chair was Sherry Bronfman, with co-chairs Eboni S Gates and Noel Hankin.

I have always been a fan of Spike Lee’s bold and social justice themed films. Lee never shies away from calling a spade and spade and uses his platform to shine a light on causes that matter to him. Lee’s beautiful wife Tonya Lewis Lee and their incredibly stylish children, Satchel and Jackson, attended the event as well.

Whitney Art Museum's 2012 Gala Sure Was Lovely!

The Whitney Museum of American Art held their annual fall gala on Tuesday night. It was cool partying in the actual galleries, such a beautiful environment. Iman Hosts Alvin Ailey Opening Night Gala Benefit; Welcomes New Artistic Director Robert Battle; John Legend Performs

It was my first Alvin & Ailey performance and the powerful dancing, accompanied with majestic music, was spectacular! First Lady Michelle Obama was an honorary chair, and I was heartbroken that she was unable to attend. Supermodel Iman also guest chaired the event. John Legend gave a magnificent performance while he sang and played the piano, with a dancer joining him. One dance performance was played to classical music; another to jazz, and my personal favorite was to Black church music. This was new Artistic Director Robert Battle inaugural event. Following the opening night performance at New York City Center was the dinner gala at the Hyatt Hotel. It sure was an immaculate set up! And unlike other dinner events which could be a bit unexciting, this dinner surrounded a large dance floor! How could they expect us to enjoy some of the most talented dancers in the world and not feel inspired to dance ourselves? I sure did have a good time!

Helping Our Community's Youth @ New Yorkers For Children Fall Gala

The New Yorkers For Children (NYFC) Fall Gala was very inspirational to me because it hit close to home for me. Like the children and youth NYFC services, I too was a foster child who later became adopted. I have always known I would adopt children and not have my own. There are too many in need children on this planet who desperately need families, which is why I feel more people should adopt. I really appreciate the work NYFC does, and last night I felt a calling to work more with foster children like I used to do in Los Angeles with a group called Living Advantage which helped foster youth transition into adulthood. I wish I was in a financial situation where I could be a foster parent, and hopefully if my plans in NY come into fruition I just might have the security and self-sufficiency where I can welcome a child into my home. Every time I see a toddler or young child on the subway looking at me I feel this longing to be a mother. Until then, I would like to get more involved talking to foster youth.
